Undergraduate Research Assistant needed for Fall

Dr. Warland is hiring a part-time (8-10 hours/week) undergraduate assistant for the F15 term.  The successful candidate will assist with laboratory testing and development of sensor networks, assist with field work in Elora and Toronto, and help with data processing.  Required qualifications are previous coursework in atmospheric science.  Preferred qualifications are meteorological or soils instrumentation experience (lab or field), a G class license, and computer programming experience.

Experts Gather to Discuss Bee Shortage @ UofG

The challenges facing the world’s bee populations will be front and centre as bee experts from across North America descend on the University of Guelph Aug. 10 to 14.

The Eastern Apicultural Society is holding its annual conference at U of G, returning to Canada for the first time since 1992. More than 500 bee enthusiasts will attend and take part in more than 100 talks and demonstrations.

Assistant Professor - Soil and Water Conservation with the School of Environmental Sciences

The School of Environmental Sciences (SES) at the University of Guelph seeks to hire an Assistant Professor in the area of Soil and Water Conservation. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Soil Science or a related discipline, and will have significant potential for research excellence as demonstrated through a strong publication record in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals.

Graduate Student Position available on the bioenergy potential of novel varieties of sugar corn being grown in Ontario

Dr. Brandon Gilroyed is seeking applicants for either an MSc or PhD position at the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph. The project will focus on the bioenergy potential of novel varieties of sugar corn being grown in Ontario. The study will be interdisciplinary in nature, ranging from basic agronomy of novel sugar corn varieties to determining optimal ensiling conditions and production of renewable energy in the form of biogas.

Graduate Student (M.Sc.) Position Influence of inbred vigour on nitrogen fertilizer requirement and risk of environmental loss.

In the seed corn industry there is considerable variation in inbred vigor in terms of seed yield and quality (seed size, cob size, number of kernels per cob etc.) and also plant morphology such as plant height and leaf area. But little is known about N requirement or N content among inbreds with different vigour.  Thus, this project will look at industry extremes, so called ‘strong and weak’ inbreds, to determine if they require different rates of nitrogen fertilizer.

2 Graduate Positions available for September with Dr. Youbin Zheng

Graduate Research in Using Beneficial Microorganisms from Aquaponic sludge for Plant Pathogen Suppression in Greenhouse Production :Aquaponics has been becoming increasingly popular in fish and plant production. Sludge from aquaponics systems is a rich source of plant nutrients, disease suppression and other beneficial microbial communities. We have funding to support a motivated domestic (i.e. Canadian citizen or permanent resident) M.Sc. or Ph.D.

Postdoctoral position in Modeling Environmental Nitrogen Losses from Corn Production, School of Environmental Sciences

We are seeking candidates for a post‐doctoral fellowship with research focus on improving nitrogen management tools for reduced environmental losses from corn production. Research activities will involve validation and testing of a process‐based model using an extensive data set on nitrous oxide emissions and nitrate leaching from corn. The validated models will be used to assess greenhouse gas emission intensity of Ontario’s corn sector and to evaluate the provincewide impact of 4R mitigation practices on environmental N losses.
