Congratulations to our own Dr. Asim Biswas for an incredible run of national and international awards! It's honestly hard to keep track of everything coming his way, but each one is so well deserved.

Taken together, these honours show a remarkable convergence of recognition from international, North American, Canadian, and Indian scientific communities. They also capture the many sides of Dr. Biswas' career: pushing research frontiers, leading globally in digital soil science, mentoring students and early-career scientists, serving professional societies, and translating soil science into real solutions for sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

"Recognition of this scale is not only a personal honour, but also a reflection of the growing importance of soil science in addressing some of the defining challenges of our time, including food security, climate resilience, soil health, and sustainable land management," said Dr. Biswas. "I am grateful to my students, colleagues, collaborators, and the many scientific communities that have supported and shaped this work."

With these honours, Dr. Biswas joins a distinguished group of scientists who are shaping the future of agriculture, soil health, and environmental sustainability. What an outstanding year, and what a wonderful recognition for the University of Guelph, the Ontario Agricultural College, the School of Environmental Sciences, and Canada's leadership in digital agriculture and soil science!

In 2025, Dr. Biswas, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Digital Agriculture, has been recognized by several of the world's leading soil and agricultural science organizations. His work in digital soil management, proximal soil sensing, digital soil mapping, machine learning, and sustainable agriculture continues to shape the field globally.

Among the most notable recognitions is the Jeju Award of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS). It's handed out only once every four years to a young or mid-career soil scientist who has done innovative and outstanding work in soil science education, research, or extension, and who has contributed meaningfully to the mission of IUSS. The award was co-established by IUSS and the Korean Society of Soil Science and Fertilizer after the 20th World Congress of Soil Science in Jeju, Korea. Dr. Biswas was selected for the global reach of his work in digital soil science, soil sensing, soil health assessment, and sustainable agriculture. What a milestone!

Dr. Biswas was also elected a Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), one of India's most distinguished scientific academies. This one is especially meaningful, since it recognizes his international scientific leadership and the way his work connects Canadian and global advances in soil and agricultural sciences.

Around the same time, Dr. Biswas was named a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (FASA) and a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America (FSSSA). Being named a Fellow is the highest recognition either society hands out, and it's reserved for members with outstanding professional achievements and service. For both ASA and SSSA, no more than 0.3 percent of active and emeritus members can be elected Fellow in any given year, so this is a real select group. Amazing!

He was also recognized as a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Soil Science (FCSSS). Dr. Biswas is the only and youngest elected Fellow of the society in 2025. The society recognizes his outstanding contributions to soil science in Canada and beyond.

On top of all that, Dr. Biswas received the Dr. J.S. Kanwar 12th International Congress Commemoration Award from the Indian Society of Soil Science (ISSS), which is the second highest honour the society gives out. He received it jointly with Dr. Nishant K. Sinha for his contributions in digital agriculture through proximal sensing, machine learning, and digital soil mapping leading to sustainable soil management.

And it doesn't stop with research. Dr. Biswas was also awarded the UGFA Distinguished Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching by the University of Guelph Faculty Association, which speaks to his commitment to student learning, graduate mentorship, and training the next generation of soil and agricultural scientists. He also received the Eminent Scientist Award from the Indian Society of Agriculture & Horticulture Research Development, recognizing the wider impact of his work across soil science, precision agriculture, and sustainable land management.
