Dr. Alex Ho Shing Chik (he/him) is the Technical Lead and Program Manager for the Wastewater Surveillance team within the Innovation and Infrastructure Solutions group at Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). With over a decade of experience working at the interface of environmental engineering and public health, Alex has excelled in academia, consulting, and public service. He specializes in water/wastewater quality and treatment, risk assessment, advanced microbiological analytical methodologies, public communication, and project management.

Alex is a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s Expert Panel on Wastewater Surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 RNA and contributes to various international expert groups. Recognized for his innovative and collaborative approach, he has also received a number of accolades internationally for both his technical contributions (e.g., American Water Works Association Doctoral Dissertation Award, 1st place) and scientific communication skills (e.g., Viennese Science Slam Winner and Austrian National Finalist).

Currently, Alex leads the strategic development of OCWA’s Proficiency Testing program for wastewater surveillance methods, the first program of its kind globally. He is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a Candidate Member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute/Canadian Institute of Planners.
