Future MES Students - Q&A

Course vs project and coursework options?

MES students will chose to follow a course only or a project plus course option. If you are unsure which option you want to take on, not to worry! You don't have to decide until half way through your second semester. A good approach here is to scope out the research done by School of Environmental Sciences (SES) faculty and contact the ones you think you might want to work with on a project of mutual interest.

What courses are available?

You should consult the list of proposed SES courses for the coming year as well as the list of outside courses that are potentially available outside of SES. These are available on the website under the MES program.

Note that topics courses are often designed to be directed independent studies with a particular faculty and that you will need to contact faculty to set up a topic of mutual interest. Again you can scope out faculty's research interests on the SES website and narrow down a topic of mutual interest.

Topics courses are also sometimes offered as a seminar with a specific topic in mind. These seminar-‐based topics courses are listed as separate sections and with a specific title when you go to register for these courses. See the document below for details on upcoming seminar based courses.  This information will be updated each semester.

Are there prerequisites for these graduate courses?

You should have a third or fourth year undergraduate course in the area that is covered by the graduate course. This will ensure that you have the sufficient background to succeed in that graduate level course. If unsure, please contact the instructor for the course. This applies to both SES graduate courses and those outside of SES.

When are the courses scheduled?

Offerings will vary from year to year. The document below is updated early in summer to reflect the courses that will be on offer. In addition, seminar topics courses to be offered in the coming year will be posted to the website. In terms of specific time slot during the week, most courses are scheduled within the first few weeks of term in consultation with the instructor.
