“ Sisyphus’ Tasks: Gender Transformative Approaches in Agriculture, Environment and Food Security”

In ancient Greek mythology Sisyphus was punished by the gods for his cunning and condemned for all eternity to roll a boulder uphill. I use this legend to reflect as a researcher and advocate for gender transformative praxis. I look at landmarks across the four decades of gender policy and programs within agriculture, environment and food security. I discuss the ways in which global and national institutions, including universities, ‘engender’ science, technology and development.

The University of Guelph’s SES distinguishes itself from other environmental science programs in that it comprises a true integration of the life and physical sciences to address important environmental problems in forest, aquatic and agro-ecosystems.
In addition to our unique research capabilities, the SES is committed to providing a learner-centered environmental science education to undergraduate and graduate students – one that is second to none in North America.
