Submitted by sessupport on March 2nd, 2015 2:33 PM

CALL FOR PROPOSALS EXTENDED: Ph.D. DISSERTATION WORKSHOP IN ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES, BALSILLIE SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, WATERLOO, ONTARIO, APRIL 30 2015

The Balsillie School of International Affairs will host an Environment & Resources dissertation workshop on April 30 2015. The workshop will give Ph.D. students the opportunity to present work in progress to an interdisciplinary audience of faculty and students.

Framework: Ph.D. students will present either a dissertation proposal or a draft thesis chapter. All participants (students and faculty) will read all of the submitted papers. Half an hour will be devoted to each paper on the day of the workshop. Authors will present their papers, leading into comments and critiques by a student discussant and open discussion of the paper. Faculty will participate in the discussion on both days, but students will be encouraged to take the lead. The workshop will thus give students the opportunity to get feedback on their own work, to gain experience of discussing the work of others, and to make connections with students and faculty at other universities.

Keynote: Dr. Steven Bernstein and Dr. Matthew Hoffmann of the University of Toronto will give the keynote address.

Eligibility: Students will need to be able to submit either an extended dissertation proposal or a draft thesis chapter by April 14 2015. Applications from students in the second year of their program or higher will be prioritized. In assessing the applications, we will take a broad view of the scope of topics covered by Environment & Resources.  We particularly encourage applications from students who are explicitly engaging with issues concerning governance and policy.

Application and Deadline: Please submit a 250-word summary of your proposal or chapter to Tahnee Prior at tprior@balsillieschool.ca by March 6th. Include with your submission your contact details, the name of your academic program, and your current year level. If you are based locally or may be able to cover some or all of your travel and accommodation costs, please indicate this in your application. Decisions will be made by mid-March 2015.

Funding: We are able to provide limited funding for participants’ travel, accommodation and meals. Please include estimated travel costs with your application.

Participating Faculty (preliminary list):

Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon (University of Waterloo)

Dr. Kathryn Hochstetler (University of Waterloo)

Dr. Randy Wigle (Wilfrid Laurier University)

Dr. Ian Rowlands (University of Waterloo)

Dr. Debora VanNijnatten (Wilfrid Laurier University)

Sincerely,

Tahnee Prior
