Environmental Entomology

Research in environmental entomology concerns fundamental and applied aspects of entomology and ecology. Research activities encompass insect systematics, the interaction of insects with biological, chemical and physical aspects of their environments, management of insect pests and conservation of beneficial species. SES is home to the University of Guelph Insect Collection  [1]- Canada’s oldest insect collection and one of North America’s most important heritage collections.

  • Ernesto Guzman [2](bee biology and apiculture)
  • Rebecca Hallett [3](agricultural pest management, climate change impacts)
  • Peter Kevan [4](pollination biology)
  • Steve Marshall [5](insect taxonomy)
  • Jonathan Newman [6](plant-insect relationships under climate change)
  • Gard Otis [7](insect behaviour)
  • Cynthia Scott-Dupree [8](integrated pest management, beneficial insect-plant relationships)
  • Jonathan Schmidt [9](insect physiology)

The University of Guelph’s SES distinguishes itself from other environmental science programs in that it comprises a true integration of the life and physical sciences to address important environmental problems in forest, aquatic and agro-ecosystems.
In addition to our unique research capabilities, the SES is committed to providing a learner-centered environmental science education to undergraduate and graduate students – one that is second to none in North America.
