"Research initiatives at the Centre for Agricultural Renewable Energy and Sustainability" The mission of the Centre for Agricultural Renewable Energy and Sustainability (CARES), located at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus, is to conduct applied and adaptive research, training and education, technology transfer, and rural community development.  At the core of CARES is a commercially operating anaerobic digester that turns agricultural and organic wastes into electricity for the Ontario hydro grid. Dr. Gilroyed will highlight the broad range of research occurring at CARES, with a focus on intersections between the emerging bioeconomy, the environment, and emergency management.

• Born and raised in rural East-Central Alberta
• Undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta in Molecular Genetics and Plant Biology
• PhD studies at the University of Calgary in Environmental Engineering
• NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Lethbridge Research Station
• Assistant Professor in the University of Guelph School of Environmental Sciences at the Ridgetown Campus since 2012
• Holds an NSERC Discovery Grant for “Characterization of microbial processes during anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic feedstocks”
• Current research projects include funding from an NSERC, OMAFRA, MOECC, AAFC, NRCan, Grain Farmers of Ontario, Egg Farmers of Canada
• Lives in London, ON with his wife Nadya and daughter Iris
