Whaling in the Antarctic: Australia v. Japan. New Zealand Intervening.

I will briefly describe the history that lead to Australia initiating a case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ; the Court) in 2010 challenging the legality under international law of the Japanese special permit whaling program in the Southern Ocean.  I will then describe my involvement as the Independent Scientific Expert witness called by Australia before oral proceedings in The Hague and then during the oral proceedings.  I will then explain the reasoning that the Court used in the judgment that JARPA II is not for purposes of scientific research that it delivered on 31 March 2014.

The University of Guelph, has awarded an honorary degree to Marc Mangel, distinguished research professor of applied mathematics and statistics at UC Santa Cruz. Mangel will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, at convocation ceremonies at Guelph in June 2014.

The University of Guelph’s SES distinguishes itself from other environmental science programs in that it comprises a true integration of the life and physical sciences to address important environmental problems in forest, aquatic and agro-ecosystems.
In addition to our unique research capabilities, the SES is committed to providing a learner-centered environmental science education to undergraduate and graduate students – one that is second to none in North America.
